This slideshow has some issues (overlapping text, etc) – but the content is GREAT! I am always looking for concise information to share with students on such a broad topic. I could spend LOTS of time looking at all the slideshows available. It is always so wonderful to see how teachers and educators are more than willing to share their hard work in order to benefit students they know they will never meet.

What an AWESOME introduction to plants!!! This could also be used at the end of a unit to see how students can relate what they’ve learned to the video – maybe a word web of all the vocabulary they “see”. I absolutely love the idea of using videos which are NOT from youtube – so much static on that site.

Thinglink –

This is a great tool – one I could see using with my students AND having them use to demonstrate understanding. Now the next step for me is to try and make a Thinglink of my own! I will put that on the to-do list for next week. 🙂

Module 3 CREATE YOUR PORTFOLIO

Creating this blog wasn’t too difficult, but I wonder about how useful it will be to me in the coming school year. At our school, we publish weekly newsletters and update our “webpage” for parents. We have been using weebly.com and I must say, I am more comfortable with that application. But, using the wordpress.com site has helped me to understand how websites/blogs are built and to force me to troubleshoot on my own (and with the help of other JumpStart members) minor problems I was having.

Module 2 LAY THE GROUNDWORK

For this module, I chose the following new tech tools to learn and try to implement in my classroom: goformative.com  and  blendspace. I am always wanting to find ways to get more data on how students are internalizing new content – so I’m hoping goformative.com will help with that goal.

This year, I partially “flipped” one of my science sections and would love to see how I might use more “flipping” strategies with all my classes – looking to blendspace to help with that.

Module 1 TAKE STOCK

 

  1. What are your biggest concerns or challenges with technology? Choose two or three and describe how these things hold you back.

*Things change so quickly in the world of TECH – just when I think I have something figured out and working – it is replaced by the “new” thing and I have to start all over again! Maybe it’s more of an issue with my mindset…I have to accept that TECH will be ever-evolving and changing and make myself adaptable to those (or at least to expect them). Also remember there is no need to “throw the baby out with the bathwater” – if a TECH tool is working for me and my students, I can stick with it..no need to jump on the bandwagon of new is always better.

*Fear: of making mistakes, messing something up. Young people don’t have this fear – they fearlessly “play around” with new TECH and figure it out. So I need to adapt some of their strategies (try and try again).

2. In “Why Bother With Technology?” many reasons are given for why technology is worth the trouble. Which two reasons are most relevant to you? Using a specific example for each, explain how using more technology could make a difference for you.

It helps you differentiate instruction. 

The desire of meet the needs of each learner where they are is something I have taken from my many years as a teacher in the primary grades. But, students at ALL levels need this courtesy and compassion. If TECH can help me to differentiate my instruction and also the students choices in demonstrating understanding of content I AM IN!!!

It gives you more one-on-one time with students. 

Especially in Science (but probably true of all subjects) I NEED time with students one on one or in small groups to really see what they are learning. Time with small groups gives me as an educator the opportunity to check for understanding and also clear up any misconceptions or confusion before it goes too far.

3. After reading the descriptions of teachers who have woven technology into their work and lives, choose two specific tools that interest you and describe how they might be used in your work.

One tool that I read about which really interested me was eduCanon – this year I had one section of my Science classes that just seemed behind all the others – no spark, no good questions from the students during instruction, not a group with strong background knowledge about our topics. So I partially “flipped” this class mid-year and was able to see great improvements in their participation and performance. I would love to learn more about the eduCanon tool and how I could use it in a semi-flipped setting.

Another tool I’d like to work with is StudyBlue – currently my students use Quizlet, but I’d like to see what the differences are in the two applications and if this one fills any holes.

4. After reading “How to Implement Technology,” choose two tips you believe are most important for successful use of technology. Explain why.

Two tips that will be invaluable (and ones I hate to admit I haven’t always done) are: FIND THE VIDEO TUTORIAL and DO TEST RUNS. I am such a visual/interactive learner – the video tutorials will prove to be an excellence resource, I hate to say it – but I have often just been too “busy” to look them up and learn on my own, unless someone was showing me how – I skipped new things. Now with this course, I am forced to figure things out and that’s a great thing! The other tip – DO TEST RUNS, is so important and I know it, but sometimes when I’m crunched for time, I skip this step and that’s where everything usually falls apart. Being prepared and confident means you have tried it yourself (just like I do with experiments in my labs).

5. Choose one thing you learned from the Q&A section and explain how you might apply it to your work.

tethering – our building has consistently spotty internet and it can be disheartening when you have a GREAT lesson planned and then…NOPE – no internet. This is especially true because all of my students have their own devices so we have the potential to be very TECHie.

StickPick – I am always looking for ways to increase student participation, especially during lectures. But, too often it is the same students answering all the questions. I love the idea of an app that could help me manage student engagement and differentiate too!

6. Preview the 30 tool categories covered in the Teacher’s Guide to Tech. Choose two that are especially interesting to you and explain how you might use these in your work.

goformative.com – I am ALWAYS wanting to check in with students and see where we are in terms of understanding. I would love a tool that allowed me in real time to be everywhere and also to really target the needs of individuals in the class and hopefully pull small groups for direct instruction based on those needs.

blendspace – I have had success with a partially flipped classroom and would like to develop more of my own lessons, etc. to support that environment.

Seeds to Shoreline

A yearlong project, Seeds to Shoreline, in partnership with the SCDNR and Clemson Extension. Students collected seeds in the Fall, put them in cold storage over the Winter, and then planted them in the Spring. The culmination of the project was returning to the marsh to help sustain the beautiful salt marsh habitat by planting new Spartina grass plants.
